An alternative form of menstrual protection Unlike towels and tampons it is washed and reused again and again for up to 10 years saving you money and protecting the environment It is a soft ‘cup’ around 4.5cm around and 5cm long that is worn inside the vagina like a tampon How do I use it? You simply fold the cup in half and push into your vagina. It does not need to be inserted very high, just high enough for it to feel comfortable for youThis may sound tricky and many people are nervous at first but from experience I can assure you that after a few tries it is very easy You will need to change your Mooncup every 4-8 hours, depending on your flow To remove simply grasp the ‘stalk’ at the base and pull firmly. The Mooncup should then be rinsed before re-inserting Once your period has ended, sterilise your Mooncup by boiling for a few minutes or using a sterilising tablet, and store in the muslin bag provided How Does it work? Here are some of the questions I get asked most often: Can I wear it overnight? Yes, the Mooncup is safe to wear overnight. Can I wear it when swimming? Yes, in fact the Mooncup is even more effective at ensuring no menstrual fluid enters the water as it is sealed and watertight, plus no desperate rush to the loo to change when you get out!! Is this the original UK Mooncup or the US Keeper? We sell only the original UK Mooncup, not the US produced Keeper or Moon Cup. The US version is much more expensive and the Keeper is made from natural gum rubber making it unsuitable for people with latex allergies. By contrast the UK Mooncup we sell is made from surgical grade silicone. Is it safe? Yes, it has been vigorously tested and conforms to all relevant UK and EU standards. It cannot get lost inside you, and provided you are careful about hygiene the risk of getting any infection is very low. In fact it is less likely to cause TSS (toxic shock syndrome) than a tampon. Can I feel it when I am wearing it? I generally can’t feel mine at all, but you may have an awareness of it being there, in the same way as you would be aware of a tampon. Generally speaking, if you can still feel it then it may need repositioning slightly I get very heavy/very light periods, can I still use it? Absolutely!! The Mooncup can be changed as often or infrequently as suits you, so it can be used whatever your flow. This is great as it means no fussing about with different absorbencies of towels or tampons on different days. It can even be used if you have particularly heavy discharge outside of having your period. For those of us unfortunate enough to suffer from heavy periods, the Mooncup is a Godsend, as you no longer need to suffer from leakage. A tampon can only cope with a flow as heavy as it can absorb, therefore if you have been sitting for a long time or have been asleep in bed, chances are you will stand up and the towel or tampon will not be able to absorb everything fast enough. Result – embarrassing moment. By contrast, the Mooncup simply catches everything, so it doesn’t matter how heavy your flow is. Its so expensive! OK, so it costs about the same as 6months supply of sanitary towels or tampons….but it lasts a staggering 10 YEARS!! Now that’s what I call economical. Do I need more than one? Some women like to have a spare, especialy if you use public toilets a lot. Alternatively (and much more cheaply) you could just carry a small bottle of water in your bag for rinsing. I find tampons uncomfortable, will this be any better? Tampons work by absorbing the menstrual flow and at the same time they also absorb you natural lubrication. This can cause dryness and discomfort. By contrast the Mooncup allows your body to operate naturally, helping to keep you healthy and comfortable. I personally could never use a tampon but wouldn’t give up my Mooncup for the world! I have a latex allergy, can I still use it?
